Dear Wexford County Council on Aging Friends:
As of October 1st we have been very busy here at COA not only with our normal day to day operations but BUSY with our snow plowing program and the Medicare Part D Open Enrollment. We have had over 400 individuals return their Information sheets, and also new people calling for information on their insurance coverage. So this month I have focused my Director’s Report on Medicare Open Enrollment.
Medicare Part D Open Enrollment runs from October 15th thru December 7th each year. This period allows beneficiaries time to review their prescription coverage for the following year. This year it is even more important to have your coverage reviewed. More than 1,100 people in Wexford County have a Medicare Supplemental Insurance Plan called the Blue Cross Blue Shield Legacy plan. Those participants have all received letters communicating substantial rate increases beginning January 1, 2017.
There will be a new Medigap Subsidy assistance program for low income people with Medicare Supplemental Insurance. The subsidy will begin January 1, 2017. Qualifying annual income limits for a single person is <$17,820 or 2 person <$24,030. The subsidy will reduce medigap premiums by $40/month for ages 65 – 75, $65/month for age > 75 and $125/month if disabled and under the age of 65.
Wexford County Council on Aging participates with Michigan Medicare/Medicaid Assistance Program (MMAP). We have trained and certified counselors here to meet with people one on one to help them apply for the above listed subsidy as well as investigate their coverage options for medical and prescription insurance. Please call (231)775-0133 or visit us at 714 W. 13th Street in Cadillac to schedule an appointment.
